Dua started as a dating app for the Albanian diaspora and is expanding into a social and professional platform for globally dispersed communities. The founding premise: Albanians are among the most geographically scattered national groups in the world, and the tools for that diaspora to find each other – for friendship, romance, or business – are inadequate.
The product is currently three apps in one, though only the dating component has launched. The second module focuses on finding new friends and local connections for recent arrivals in unfamiliar cities – not reconnecting with people from back home, but building a local support network among people who share a cultural background. The Albanian diaspora is a specific and manageable starting point, but the generalization question is more interesting. Immigration to Western countries is at or near historic highs in absolute terms; the proportion of foreign-born residents in the US is approaching the levels of the great migration era of 1860–1910.
